Highlights bring lighter or contrasting strands into an existing colour. The effect can be barely visible or deliberately graphic; placement matters just as much as the shade on the colour chart.
Highlights, balayage and ombré
Highlights describe the lighter pieces themselves. Foils can isolate precise sections; balayage describes a painting technique used to create a softer transition. Ombré describes a darker-to-lighter effect across the lengths. These terms overlap in a finished design, so a reference photograph is more useful than a label alone.
Choose where the light sits
Fine woven pieces give scattered brightness. Face-framing highlights draw attention to the fringe and cheek area. Colour around the ears becomes visible when hair is tucked back, while an underlayer can remain subtle until the hair is tied up. Brighter ends emphasise movement through long layers. A broad panel creates a stronger statement, especially in a bob or shag.

Warm, cool or expressive colour
Caramel, honey and copper can work with warmth already present in the hair. Beige and creamy blonde offer a gentler contrast; ash, silver and pale lavender usually depend on a sufficiently light, even base. Rose and peach can be subtle or vivid depending on that base. A colour is not universally flattering to one skin tone: compare swatches in natural light and choose the contrast you enjoy.
What darker or previously coloured hair changes
A pale highlight on dark hair may need lightening, and old dark dye can make the result less predictable. Show your stylist the full history of box colour, henna, bleach and straightening. A strand test helps assess whether the desired brightness is realistic. Keeping a deeper root can soften visible regrowth, but does not eliminate toner appointments or hair care.
Plan the appointment and upkeep together
The amount of hair treated, foil density, target brightness and corrective work affect time and cost. Ask whether toner and treatments are included in your chosen store's service. Afterward, use a colour-care routine appropriate to your texture, reduce unnecessary heat and ask before adding a strongly pigmented shampoo. A refresh should target what has changed rather than automatically lightening the same lengths again.
