Before bleaching your hair: colour goals, limits and aftercare

Pale blonde, silver and pastel colours often need a lighter starting canvas. Bleaching can create that canvas, but the achievable result must be balanced against the condition and history of your hair.

Lightening is different from fading

Lightener chemically changes pigment in the hair to create a lighter base. Fading is the gradual change or loss of an applied colour over time. Dark hair usually reveals warmer stages as it lightens, and toner can refine the resulting shade; it cannot make an insufficiently light base behave like pale blonde. Not every brunette, copper or rich colour needs bleach.

Bring the whole colour history

Old permanent dye, henna, previous bleach, perms and straightening can affect both the lift and the strength of the hair. Include products used at home, even if they were labelled temporary. A strand test can reveal uneven lightening or weakness before committing to a larger section. Your target may require several visits, a warmer intermediate colour or a less extensive design.

Understand the risks and stopping points

Lightening can increase dryness, roughness and breakage, especially when overlapping previously treated hair. Scalp irritation or allergic reactions are also possible. Report burning, significant pain or unusual heat immediately. Do not proceed over injured or irritated skin, and seek medical advice about previous reactions. Conditioning or bond-focused products do not make unlimited lightening safe.

What a considered appointment includes

The stylist assesses the hair, selects the sections and product system, monitors processing and rinses according to that system. Toning and conditioning then refine the finish. Ask which steps are included in the quote and whether your target is realistic in the booked time. Follow the salon's preparation advice rather than a universal rule to avoid washing for several days.

Separate colour maintenance from conditioning

A colour-care cleanser and conditioner address everyday care. A violet or blue shampoo adds pigment to counter particular unwanted tones; it is not a repairing treatment and can deposit unevenly on porous ends. Use it only at the strength and frequency appropriate to your colour. A targeted mask or leave-in may improve manageability, while trims remove ends that are too compromised to keep comfortably.

Protect the result between visits

Detangle gently, reduce repeated high heat and use a suitable heat protectant when styling. Avoid tight pulling and rough towel-drying. For swimming, discuss a practical routine and rinse after pool exposure. A root retouch should be planned to minimise unnecessary overlap. Bleached hair does not become untreated again simply by waiting a fixed number of weeks.
