Grey hair does not have to be hidden, and choosing colour does not mean choosing solid black. Coverage, blending and growing out your natural silver are different goals with different maintenance needs.
Start with the result you want
Fuller coverage aims for a more uniform colour. Blending reduces contrast while allowing some variation to remain. Highlights or lowlights can connect grey and pigmented sections, and a gloss may adjust tone without delivering opaque coverage. The distribution of grey around the hairline, parting and back matters as much as its overall percentage.
Choose depth as well as tone
A very dark result can create a stronger line when pale roots return. A softer brown or carefully placed lighter pieces may reduce that contrast, but will not suit every starting colour or preference. Warm chocolate, neutral beige-brown and cooler shades can all be considered. Compare the result you like with the amount of regrowth you are comfortable seeing.

Not every product provides the same coverage
Direct dyes, demi-permanent and permanent colour work differently. A tinted conditioner may add a translucent tone, while a permanent formula may be selected for stronger coverage. Resistant grey sections can need a different plan from porous coloured ends. A strand test and clear consultation are more useful than assuming that every product described as nourishing will cover evenly.
Growing out silver is a colour project too
If you want to stop covering grey, discuss how to soften the boundary between natural roots and old colour. Cutting gradually, adding selected lighter or darker strands, or adjusting the tone may help the transition. Removing years of dark dye can require several appointments and may not be suitable for fragile hair. A gradual plan is often easier to maintain than forcing a dramatic result in one visit.
Root appointments and daily care
Book based on visible regrowth and your preferred finish rather than an age-based schedule. Retouching roots does not always require recolouring the entire length. Use a routine suited to your texture and discuss toning shampoo before applying it repeatedly; purple pigment is not a universal answer for every brown or grey shade. Tell the stylist about prior reactions and follow the product's allergy-alert instructions.
